In a bid to make decent housing accessible and affordable, the Government of Rwanda has introduced a rent-to-own scheme aimed at low-income earners. This initiative allows tenants to pay regular rent while contributing a small additional amount toward eventually owning their homes over a 20-year period.

The extra charge is calculated to cover the full cost of the property by the end of the scheme, making homeownership achievable even for those with limited financial resources.

The initiative has been widely welcomed, as it specifically addresses the housing needs of low-income citizens. The government has confirmed that the program will be rolled out in the Mpazi and Nyabisindu areas of Kigali.

To further support participants, the scheme will include government-backed affordable financing, making it easier for individuals who may not qualify for traditional mortgages to become homeowners.

This move underscores Rwanda’s commitment to providing inclusive and sustainable housing solutions for all its citizens.
